Session 4: Boundless Data

This session is directed towards two groups: one consists of all those who own or use data in their key processes in public road administrations, the other of private companies that intend to develop services and products utilizing existing public data in the transport sector.

The starting point is the fundamental role of road, traffic and vehicle data in transport systems and services, for information as well as operations. Public road administrations are responsible for these data; they can also be used by other public and private actors and the public. We give a view of what "boundless data" means and how data can be shared, if there is an open interface. The session points out op-portunities and needs for sharing data between organizations, actors and countries. Cases show the benefits of sharing, what conditions private enterprise have for being able to use the data and what other demands there are.

One might ask whether such "boundless data" are needed, or whether public administrations have a choice? Another questions is what is needed? The EU 2003/98 directive and the Inspire directive take up sharing and re-use of public information. Many road administrations develop strategies for responding to these directives and prepare the work to make their data available for re-use. The Danish Road Direc-torate will give us some answers on this.

The Nordic Road Association section 11 Chair Liv Nordbye introduces the theme with reference to her Master's thesis in Business Administration at the East London University and an excerpt from the presentation "Managing public data - choices and challenges", held at the ITS World Congress in Beijing in October 2007.

Three business cases are presented:
Maria Jernbäcker, project manager at Combitech company, Sweden, presents the research and collaboration project Smart mobile travel guide, using data from many sources.

Rune Haddal, director at the Norwegian Norkart A/S, presents the WEB-Atlas web service, using geographical data on the basis of 12 different contracts

Heikki Halttula, director of Vianova Systems Finland Oy, presents the risks and possible savings for boundless data transmission between public organizations and different countries.

Anne Kjölhede Revald from the Danish Road Directorate presents the administration's implementation of the Inspire Directive and the Directive on the Re-use of Public Information as part of the Strategy for a digital Danish Road Directorate.

Discussion and conclusions.
